Never forget: Jay Williams

Basketball fans around the country will never forget the name. Jay Williams was a blossoming star from Duke University. In his first collegiate season, he became the first ever freshman to average double digits in scoring in that program. He finished his freshman season averaging 14.5 ppg, 6.5 apg, and 4.2 rpg.

In Williams' second season, he put up an outstanding 21.6 ppg, paired with 6.1 apg. And in his final season at duke, put up another 21 ppg for the year.

After his Junior season, Williams entered the 2002 NBA Draft. He was selected 2nd overall, just behind Yao Ming. His rookie year would be one of inconsistency, but with flashes of greatness. Putting up just under 10 ppg as a rookie, the Bulls were disappointed, but hoping for a breakthrough.

Unfortunately, this breakthrough would never come. In June of 2003, just before the draft, Williams was involved in a motorcycle accident, injuring him in a way that would go on to end his career.

Williams tried for a couple comeback stints after the Bulls moved on. One in the development league, and one via tryouts with the Nets and Heat. However, he never went on to play another season.

One has to wonder what Williams could have developed into had it not been for that accident, but you've got to appreciate the amazing college career despite the swift end to a professional career.
